Overview
The Homelessness Impact Report presents a summary of the evidence Mission Australia gathered from 2020-22, including rich data from services, experiences of practitioners and the voices of people with a lived experience of homelessness.
The report shows a 26% increase in demand for Mission Australia’s homelessness services over three years, and a 50% increase in people who are seeking support after they’ve become homeless rather than when they are at risk.
The findings demonstrate that homelessness can be ended if the right supports, services and housing are in place, and if there is a focus on prevention and early intervention.
Of the people who received support before they became homeless, 94% were supported to remain living in their home and avoid homelessness. People also reported improved wellbeing and made progress towards their goals, such as education and employment. However, Mission Australia and other service providers were only able to find a secure long-term home for a third of people experiencing homelessness.
The report highlights the need for urgent investment in homelessness prevention and support services, and for investment in one million new social and affordable homes.
