Chaplaincy at Mission Australia

Mission Australia’s chaplains offer compassionate, faith-based support for our the people we serve, communities and staff.

Compassionate care rooted in faith

Mission Australia’s chaplains offer compassionate, faith-based support for the people we serve, communities and staff. Grounded in our Christian identity and delivered with deep respect for all beliefs, our chaplains are here to listen, encourage and work alongside people - whoever they are and wherever they are on their journey.

What our chaplains do

Our chaplains come from a variety of Christian backgrounds and serve across Mission Australia in a range of ways, including:

  • providing a confidential listening ear
  • facilitating prayer, reflection and spiritual care
  • offering personal and ethical guidance
  • building partnerships with local churches and faith communities
  • responding in times of crisis or transition

Chaplains are available to anyone accessing Mission Australia services, staying in our residential services, living in our community homes or working as part of our teams, always by invitation and with respect for individual choice.

Community Chaplaincy

Our Community Chaplaincy Program supports the spiritual and social wellbeing of communities by building relationships with churches, faith and community groups, and offering spiritual resources to those who seek it.

Our Community Chaplains work to grow the support available in the communities we work in, especially in areas facing disadvantage. They nurture each community’s sense of connection, confidence, contentment and spiritual wellbeing, so people can better care for themselves, serve others, and contribute to a stronger, more connected community.Through Community Chaplaincy support, people develop a stronger sense of belonging within their community and are more likely to turn to one another for spiritual, emotional, social and practical support. Already operating in multiple locations, the program plans to place more Community Chaplains in more communities in the coming years.

Community Chaplains are listed in our Service Directory and can be contacted directly for support or local partnership.

Support for our people

Chaplains also play an important role in supporting Mission Australia staff.

Their approach is shaped by the needs of each team or individual and may include:

  • attending team meetings or gatherings
  • running prayer or reflection sessions
  • providing one-on-one support or referrals
  • marking significant occasions or offering care during difficult times.

Although it is a daily struggle to put my past behind me, I know that God loves me. This gives me peace and strength to face each day.
